Selinunte

Selinunte is not only a destination for archaeological tourism, but it is also a major attraction due to its beautiful and pristine beach.
The beach of Selinunte is divided between two districts of the city of Castelvetrano, which are Marinella di Selinunte, and Selinunte Triscina.

The beach of Marinella di Selinunte, extends along a sandy shoreline near the Acropolis and the Belice River. Today it's become a large seaside resort with a 5 km-long beach, and a crystal blue sea. The beach is equipped with bathing establishments and restaurants that stay open until late at night.

The other seaside locality of Triscina of Selinunte, with its 6 km of beach, is one of the most popular destinations among tourists who come to these areas. Here the beach is also equipped with bathing establishments which are full of entertainment.

The beach of Selinunte is an ideal environment for the spawning of the Caretta Caretta sea turtle. The female goes to the beach and digs a pit no more than 75 cm deep with her fins, where she lays from 60 to 200 eggs in a short time. After spawning, the eggs are covered by sand and hatch about 2 months later.

The importance of the Selinunte beach for turtle nesting, within the nature reserve, is one of the most prestigious aspects of this territory, even if the Caretta whilst enjoying special protection remains one of the most hunted animals of our seas.
