According to Butler, Trapani may have hidden the mythical land of the Phaeacians, the Scheria described in the Odyssey, and the Homeric poem may have been written by a young Sicilian woman capable of transforming the places of her daily life into an epic setting.
The route compares the verses of the Odyssey with the city’s topography, following an itinerary through some of the most evocative places in the historic centre of Trapani.
The walk starts from the entrance of Villa Margherita and continues towards the Castello di Terra, seen from the outside, before crossing Via Garibaldi, one of the city’s most elegant streets.
The tour then continues to the former fish market square, the Mura di Tramontana and finally the Torre di Ligny, the westernmost point of the city, where the Tyrrhenian Sea meets the Mediterranean. The tour also includes a visit to the tower and the chance to enjoy the sunset from the terrace, with a view over the Egadi Islands.
Samuel Butler’s theory is one of the most fascinating interpretations of the connection between the Odyssey and western Sicily. The English author identified in Trapani and its surroundings several geographical elements compatible with the Homeric tale: the shape of the city, its relationship with the sea, the presence of the islands and its strategic position between two harbours.
In this interpretation, the city of Trapani becomes a kind of living text, a landscape to be observed through the eyes of myth. The Torre di Ligny, the Mura di Tramontana, the Scoglio del Malconsiglio and the Egadi Islands thus become stages in a story that brings together history, literature and imagination.
