Once again, the magic of open-air cinema returns to the enchanting setting of Piazzetta San Giuliano in Erice. The “Ericèstate 2025 – Cinema” series will accompany residents and visitors from August 1st to September 3rd with a selection of Italian and international films, designed to satisfy diverse tastes and offer a unique experience every evening. All screenings will begin at 9:15 PM.
The season opens on Friday, August 1st with Volare (Italy, 2023), the directorial debut of Margherita Buy, who also stars alongside Anna Bonaiuto and Elena Sofia Ricci in a contemporary and intimate story. On Monday, August 4th, the spotlight shifts to Emily (2022), a biopic set across the UK, USA, and Australia, directed by Frances O’Connor. The film stars Emma Mackey as the tormented author Emily Brontë, delving into the inner struggles and creative power behind Wuthering Heights.
On Thursday, August 7th, the screen will light up with The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza, Italy, 2013), Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning masterpiece. Toni Servillo plays Jep Gambardella, a disenchanted journalist observing the empty glamour of contemporary Rome. Sunday, August 10th features Spectre (UK/USA, 2015), the 24th installment of the James Bond saga, starring Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, and Léa Seydoux in a high-stakes thriller filled with espionage and breathtaking action.
Wednesday, August 13th brings the Franco-Belgian comedy Nothing to Declare? (Rien à déclarer, 2010), written and directed by Dany Boon, who also stars alongside Benoît Poelvoorde. The film humorously portrays the 1993 abolition of customs between France and Belgium, exploring rivalry, prejudice, and unexpected friendship. The next evening, Thursday, August 14th, One Hundred Sundays (Cento domeniche, Italy, 2023) will be screened, directed by and starring Antonio Albanese. The film tenderly portrays the devastating impact of a banking collapse on an ordinary man’s life.
On Sunday, August 17th, Alain Resnais’ Wild Grass (Les herbes folles, France/Italy, 2009) takes center stage. A refined, surreal tale starring Sabine Azéma and André Dussollier, the film intertwines fate, desire, and chance with elegance and wit. The series will conclude in September with two cinematic gems: on Monday, September 1st, The Shape of Water (USA, 2017) will be shown — a modern fairytale by Guillermo del Toro, winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture, and starring Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones in a love story between a mute woman and an amphibious creature. Finally, on Wednesday, September 3rd, Capote (Canada/USA, 2005) closes the festival. Directed by Bennett Miller, the film follows writer Truman Capote during the creation of In Cold Blood and features Philip Seymour Hoffman in an Oscar-winning performance.
In case of bad weather, screenings will be moved to the Teatro Gebel Hamed.
