Great sailing returns to Trapani with the Rotta dei Florio, an offshore regatta with a unique charm in memory of a prestigious family that made the entrepreneurial fortunes of the Egadi islands and Palermo; we are obviously referring to the Florios.
The Florios were a true dynasty that between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century established themselves as one of the richest families in Italy. Their business empire ranged from chemicals to winemaking, through tourism and the tuna industry, with a fleet of ninety-nine ships at their service.
By virtue of this passion for the sea and its recreational activities, every year since 2022 the regatta called “La Rotta dei Florio” has been organized which from 2 to 4 May ploughs the sea around the Egadi archipelago.
This year in its fourth edition, the Florio regatta celebrates 120 years of activity of the Mondello Nautical Club with a sailing event aimed not only at commemorating the Florio entrepreneurs of the sea, but also at enhancing the territory from a tourist perspective, with the support of an increasing number of shipowners and crews from Sicily and elsewhere.
The fourth edition is organized in collaboration with the Lega Navale di Trapani and will be divided into two stages, with a first leg that will start from the gulf of Mondello on Friday 2 May at 10 am and an expected arrival in Trapani in the late evening. The second stage will instead start from Trapani on 3 May in the early afternoon, passing around the tuna fishery of Favignana, not coincidentally one of the nerve centers of the Florio entrepreneurial activities.
The Florio regatta will end on Sunday morning, May 4, with the return of the crews to Mondello which, according to the organizers´ forecasts, should have 20 to 30 boats, involving hundreds of people on board, including sailors and crew members.
