The procession of the Misteri held in Trapani on Good Friday, nearly 400 years. The origin is Spanish, ancient Casazas that developed in Genoa and all the lands ruled by the Iberians. The procession begins at 14, Good Friday and ends twenty-four hours. It is considered the longest Italian religious festival and especially among the oldest. The Mysteries are the artistic depiction of the death and passion of Christ, a total of 20 religious groups, including two statues of Jesus and the Dead Lady of Sorrows. They were granted custody, by deeds, by the Confraternity of St. Michael the Archangel who instituted the rite to local craftsmen with a commitment to take care of its output in the procession.
The technique of creation of the statues, begun by Giovanni Matera, is to carve the wood faces, hands and feet, as is the wooden skeleton. Are internally supported by frames made of cork, on which they modeled the clothes due to the fact that the cloth, soaked in a mixture of glue and plaster, allowing a more natural clothes and greater plasticity of expression, a technique typically Trapani, called Carcheto. In this way the drapery folds of the clothes were made of those who shape the diversity of the represented scene and make each different from the figure.
For the realization of these groups there inspired classical iconography, but to incidents mentioned in the sacred texts or in the apocryphal gospels and adding their personal interpretations, Trapani and artists were able to give these groups a dynamic representative only in the vast panorama of sacred representations.
The statues are attached to a wooden base that launches with a special procedure in order to allow for some fluctuations during transport, implying a scenic representation of the group.
The oldest Vare were carved by artisans Trapani with depictions of children, symbols of the class of membership or city of Trapani.
The launches of wood and rests on trestles shall replace the forks. Indeed in the early years of the procession, when the groups had to make some stops, leaning on his fork supporting the entire weight. However, this solution presents many difficulties and they often fall over the entire group. It was thought therefore to replace them with the stand which, if they have increased the weight of the entire group, however, have led to more safety during transport. The old forks are still present in the Procession of the Mysteries of Erice, where size and weight of the groups are far below those of the capital.
Since 1950, we began to cover the racks with a sumptuous black coat (a īmanta), on which is engraved the name of the class of membership. Today the groups are held throughout the year in the Church of the Souls in Purgatory.
The theatrical representation of the Mysteries is set in Medieval times as that at the time of the Roman occupation of Palestine.
