If there’s one thing everyone agrees on, it’s that Italy is known as “il bel paese” – the beautiful country. The reason is easy to understand: this old boot-shaped land is filled with art, history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. From the eternal city of Rome to the stunning Alps and Apennines, from the ingenious architecture of Venice to the five Italian seas — this country truly has something for everyone.

The 5 perfect cities for a weekend getaway

Selecting just five Italian cities ideal for a weekend escape is no easy task. So, some basic criteria were applied: first and foremost, the cities had to be easily accessible and offer plenty of services, such as airports, trains, hotels, and more.

Great importance was given to the artistic, cultural, and historical aspects. And, of course, the food and wine tradition was also a key factor — as cuisine is essential for anyone seeking a break from the daily grind.

Bergamo

Bergamo is a city in northern Italy that is often unfairly overlooked, despite having everything one could want. It’s extremely easy to reach — whether by plane (thanks to Orio al Serio airport), by train, or by road. It’s surrounded by greenery, rich in spas and relaxation centers, and features one of the most beautiful historic towns in Italy. Plus, it’s just a short distance from Milan.

Reggio Calabria

At the very tip of the boot lies the splendid Reggio Calabria, where history and scenic beauty come together. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking to escape the chaos and dive into ancient history, thanks to its fantastic city museum, home of the famous Riace Bronzes. It’s easy to reach by plane (the airport is right nearby), by road, and especially by high-speed train. It’s also a great winter destination for sea lovers, thanks to its beautiful waterfront.

L’Aquila

For some, this name may evoke somber memories, but more than 10 years have passed and life has returned to one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. While a few scars are still visible, they quickly fade from awareness if you immerse yourself in the surrounding natural beauty. The food is sublime, and it’s best reached by road or rail — or via Pescara airport, which is about 65 km away.

Bologna

This city is already well known to mass tourism, but it deserves even more appreciation from Italians themselves. It offers far more than just its famous university atmosphere, and it’s absolutely worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. It’s also extremely easy to reach.

Turin

Perhaps the most important city on this list — and possibly the most underestimated. Yes, the grey sky is one of its traits, but not always. And in any case, Turin is rich in architectural treasures and surrounded by stunning natural settings. Within the city itself, the Dora and Po rivers add to its charm. It´s a city full of history, tinged with mystery and esotericism. Far from being just an industrial hub, the Piedmont capital holds far more than most imagine — all in the shadow of the Mole Antonelliana.

A country for everyone

Italy’s greatest strength lies in its diversity. That’s why, before traveling abroad, it’s worth discovering the wonders of our own peninsula. The world is full of extraordinary and beautiful places, and no one denies that visiting the Seven Wonders is amazing. But often, beauty is right within reach.
