I Ciclopi: contemporary art in Trapani

Until 28 June 2026, the contemporary art space INCURVA in Trapani hosts the group exhibition “I Ciclopi (Eye, Camera, Myth)”, curated by Saim Demircan. The exhibition takes place in Largo San Francesco di Paola, in the historic centre of the city, and offers an interesting cultural stop for visitors spending a few days in Trapani.

The project is inspired by a 1971 text by Robert Smithson, where the camera is connected to the ancient Greek myth of the Cyclops: a single eye that observes, records, but can also distort reality. Starting from this image, the exhibition explores the relationship between vision, photography, body, technology and myth. The camera is not presented as a neutral instrument, but as a device that selects, interprets and changes the way we look at the world.

The show includes works by Dora Budor, Jana Euler, Jasper Marsalis, Simon Dybbroe Møller, Nina Porter, Margaret Raspé and Davide Stucchi. Visitors will find sculptures, films, installations and paintings, with works that refer to monocular vision, reuse photographic technologies or question the very idea of the image.

Opening hours, free admission and featured artists

The artists involved have exhibited in major international institutions, including the MoMA in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Kunsthalle Basel. This makes the exhibition one of the most interesting cultural options of the period for visitors who want to discover Trapani’s contemporary side.

The exhibition is open with free admission. According to the available information, opening hours are: Thursday and Friday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Sunday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The venue is also described as accessible to people with disabilities. Before visiting, it is still advisable to check for possible updates, especially on holidays or in case of visits by appointment.

For travellers staying in Trapani, “I Ciclopi” is a good opportunity to discover a different side of the city, beyond the sea, the old town and local food. After the exhibition, visitors can continue with a walk through the historic centre, among churches, old palaces and views of the harbour.

To plan your stay, you can also check where to sleep in a B&B in Trapani, the restaurants in Trapani and ideas on what to do in Trapani during your visit.

2026 edition of Trapani Comix

From 22 to 24 May 2026, Villa Margherita in Trapani will host the seventh edition of Trapani Comix & Games, one of the most anticipated pop culture events in western Sicily. Organised by Nerd Attack ETS in collaboration with the Luglio Musicale Trapanese and the Municipality of Trapani, the festival is set to bring together comics, gaming, live entertainment and themed experiences in the city’s central public garden.

What visitors can expect

The 2026 edition is designed as a three-day event featuring comics, shows, games, exhibitions and activities for different age groups. According to the official website, the festival will include themed areas such as videogames, role-playing games, artist alley, Twitch area, medieval area, exhibition zone and the new Hanami Zone, inspired by Japanese culture and cherry blossom season.

Visitors can expect virtual reality, augmented reality, simulators, tabletop games, fantasy books, manga, gadgets and food stands, alongside artists, illustrators and exhibitors from across Italy. One of the first major names already announced is C. B. Cebulski, the current Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, whose presence confirms the growing national profile of the festival.

A city-wide atmosphere

The event will not be limited to Villa Margherita. The 2026 programme also includes the return of “Comix in Vetrina”, a project that turns shop windows across Trapani into illustrated displays inspired by comics, cinema and videogames. The initiative helps spread the festival atmosphere through the city centre and creates an open-air artistic route for residents and tourists alike.

The visual identity of the new edition is also one of its strongest elements. The official poster has been created by internationally acclaimed Italian artist Mirka Andolfo and reinterprets the local legend of the pirate Serisso through a contemporary female figure, set against the iconic rose window of the Church of Sant’Agostino. It is a choice that connects local history with modern pop imagery.

For travellers visiting Trapani in late May, Trapani Comix 2026 offers more than a niche fair. It is a lively city event combining entertainment, creativity and community, ideal for anyone looking to add a different and contemporary experience to their stay.

The Procession of the Risen Christ in Trapani - 2006

Among the most heartfelt events of Easter in Trapani, the Procession of the Risen Christ marks the joyful moment that follows the solemn rites of Holy Week. Although in its current form it is a relatively recent tradition, this celebration recalls ancient Easter rituals that for centuries characterized Easter Sunday in the city.

In the past, the day was marked by very distinctive ceremonies, such as the Calata da tila, the ritual in which the image of Christ was unveiled at midday amid flowers, colors, and the festive ringing of church bells. On the same day there was also the ancient Meeting between Mary and Jesus, with the statues crossing the city and meeting in the historic center.

Origins and meaning of the rite

The current procession of the Risen Christ can be seen as a revival of that ancient tradition, which for a long time remained in the background compared with the better-known Procession of the Mysteries. Its symbolic meaning is clear: after the sorrow of Good Friday, the city celebrates the Resurrection of Christ with a joyful rite proclaiming victory over death.

The statue of the Risen Christ dates back to the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century and was made of wood, canvas, and glue, according to the same artistic tradition used for the Mysteries. Originally, it represented the Sacred Heart of Jesus, but it was later adapted to the traditional iconography of the Risen Christ with a white robe and the banner of the Resurrection.

One of the most distinctive features of the procession is the traditional annacata, the rhythmic swaying movement with which the statue is carried on the shoulders, accompanied by the joyful sound of the marching band. This movement makes the festive spirit of Trapani’s Easter rite even more evident.

The Easter Sunday program

On Easter Sunday, at 9:30 am, the traditional meeting between the Sorrowful Virgin and the Risen Christ takes place in the Church of the Collegio. At 10:15 am, the procession begins and heads toward the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, where the solemn Easter Pontifical Mass is celebrated at 11:00 am.

In the afternoon, at 5:30 pm, the Risen Christ goes out once again in procession through the streets of Trapani’s historic center, before returning to the Church of the Collegio. It is an event that brings the city’s Easter celebrations to a close with a deeply shared moment of faith, tradition, and popular participation.

Also discover the 2026 Trapani Mysteries itinerary

Erice Mysteries Procession 2026

Erice is also preparing to experience one of the most heartfelt moments of Holy Week with the traditional Mysteries Procession on Good Friday, scheduled for April 3, 2026. It is a very ancient religious event which, since 1742, has passed through the charming streets of the medieval village, attracting worshippers, visitors, and tourists every year.

Unlike the more famous procession in Trapani, the one in Erice takes place on a smaller scale, yet it still preserves an authentic charm and a strong historical identity. Originally, the procession included both sculptural groups and living characters. Since 1856, however, the procession has consisted exclusively of statues and two ceremonial floats, created in the 18th century by Trapani artists using techniques similar to those employed for the Mysteries of Trapani, although on a smaller scale.

One of the main differences from the Trapani procession lies in the way the groups are carried. In Erice, the traditional “annacate” are not performed. Instead, the sacred groups move at a faster pace and are supported by forked carrying poles. This is also due to the particular layout of the streets in the historic centre, characterized by ancient stone paving and a more challenging route.

The event is organized by the Confraternity of San Martino, whose members lead the procession. The procession depicts the moments of the Passion and Death of Jesus, with scenes inspired by the Gospels such as the Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Ascent to Calvary, Jesus lying in the urn, and Our Lady of Sorrows. Closing the procession is the Crucifix, dating back to the 16th century.

The procession starts from the Church of San Giuliano at 2:00 pm and, accompanied by the town band, makes its way through the streets of the historic centre before returning at around 8:00 pm. Although smaller than the one in Trapani, the Mysteries Procession of Erice is an intense event, rich in spirituality and tradition, offering visitors an authentic experience in one of the most fascinating villages in Sicily.

For those wishing to visit the village during this occasion, it may also be useful to discover what to do in Erice and where to eat by choosing from the best restaurants in Erice.

2026 Scinnute calendar

On Friday, February 20, one of the most intense and eagerly awaited moments of Holy Week in Trapani begins: the Lenten rites of the “scinnute” of the Sacred Groups of the Mysteries.

This year, the scinnute will take place in the Church of the Collegio, as the Church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory is currently closed for restoration works. The groups, transferred here in December, are therefore returning to a place that had already hosted them between 1947 and 1957, and from here they will also set out on Good Friday.

Throughout the entire season of Lent, worshippers and devotees gather in this baroque church in Trapani for moments of adoration. In turn, the groups are placed at the center of the altar, becoming the focal point of prayer and contemplation. Outside the church, as tradition dictates, a marching band performs the most famous funeral marches, creating a solemn and evocative atmosphere that makes these events particularly engaging for visitors as well.

The term scinnuta means “descent.” It dates back to the time when the Mysteries were kept in the ancient Church of San Michele, placed in elevated niches. Every Friday during Lent, they were lowered from their position, hence the name that remains in local dialect and collective memory.

Today, following the wartime destruction of the Church of San Michele, the physical “descent” no longer takes place in the same way, as the groups are positioned at ground level and are simply moved for adoration. From a historical perspective, the rite has changed, but it has not lost its charm. This living tradition, capable of renewing itself without losing its identity, continues to attract tourists and visitors who flock to Trapani during the Easter period.

Originally, the calendar provided for six scinnute each Friday of Lent, dedicated to the most representative scenes of Christ’s Passion: “Jesus in the Garden,” later replaced after World War II by “The Fall at the Cedron,” “Jesus before Annas,” “The Crowning with Thorns,” later replaced by “The Flagellation,” “The Sentence,” “The Ascent to Calvary,” and finally “Our Lady of Sorrows.”

Today, the rite is different: it involves multiple groups at the same time, is not limited to Fridays only, and also includes the two Madonnas who go out on Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday.

Here is this year’s calendar of the scinnute.

Friday, February 20:
The Separation – Goldsmiths’ Guild
The Washing of the Feet – Fishermen’s Guild

Tuesday, February 24:
Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane – Gardeners’ Guild
The Arrest – Metalworkers’ Guild

Friday, February 27:
The Fall at the Cedron – Sailors’ Guild
Jesus before Annas – Fruit Sellers’ Guild

Tuesday, March 3:
The Denial – Barbers and Hairdressers’ Guild
Jesus before Herod – Fishmongers’ Guild

Friday, March 6:
The Flagellation – Builders and Stonemasons’ Guild
The Crowning with Thorns – Bakers’ Guild

Tuesday, March 10:
Ecce Homo – Shoemakers’ Guild
The Sentence – Butchers’ Guild

Friday, March 13:
The Ascent to Calvary – The People
The Stripping of Garments – Textile and Clothing Guild

Tuesday, March 17:
The Raising of the Cross – Carpenters and Cabinetmakers’ Guild
The Wound to the Side – Painters and Decorators’ Guild

Friday, March 20:
The Deposition – Tailors and Upholsterers’ Guild
The Transport to the Tomb – Salt Workers’ Guild

Tuesday, March 24:
Mother of Mercy of the Farmers – Heirs of the Porters of Piano San Rocco

Wednesday, March 25:
Mother of Mercy of the People – Fruit Sellers’ Guild

Friday, March 27:
Jesus in the Urn – Pasta Makers’ Guild
Mary Most Holy of Sorrows – Guild of Drivers, Hoteliers, Bartenders, Waiters, Chefs, Pastry Chefs and Taxi Drivers

All “Scinnute” will be preceded by an outdoor musical performance at 6:00 pm.
Prayer service at 7:00 pm.
Outdoor musical performance until 8:00 pm.

Nativity of Mary Exhibition at the Pepoli Museum in Trapani

The exhibition “The Nativity of Mary. Art and Tradition in Trapani” was inaugurated on 28 November at the Pepoli Regional Museum in Trapani, offering visitors a fascinating journey through one of Sicily’s most deeply rooted religious and cultural traditions.

Promoted by the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, the exhibition provides an opportunity to discover the long-standing devotion to the Nativity of Mary, celebrated by the Catholic Church on 8 September with a solemn feast of very ancient origins. In particular, the exhibition highlights a tradition closely linked to the Trapani area, where from the mid-18th century until relatively recent times it was customary for families to recreate the Nativity of Mary in their homes using 18th-century wooden statues.

The events surrounding Mary’s birth and childhood are narrated in the Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal text dating back to the 2nd century AD. This account describes the story of Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, and the miraculous conception that followed twenty years of childless marriage. Although the text is not officially recognized by the Church, it has had a profound influence on religious devotion and iconography. The Feast of the Nativity of Mary itself, however, is fully recognized by the Church and dates back to the 5th century, when it was established in Jerusalem in conjunction with the dedication of a basilica traditionally believed to have been built on the site of the Virgin’s birthplace.

The exhibition at the Pepoli Museum features a detailed reconstruction of the palace of Saints Joachim and Anne, arranged in several meticulously recreated rooms. The scenes are populated with wooden and wax figurines, dressed in fabric garments, depicting noblewomen, prominent figures and servants from the 18th century. The setting is enriched with miniature furniture, carved, gilded and painted, as well as mirrors and decorative objects that faithfully reproduce the Sicilian Rococo style, offering visitors an evocative glimpse into aristocratic life of the period.

The exhibition brings together a valuable collection of works, some of which come from private collections, and represents an unmissable cultural experience for visitors to Trapani who wish to explore the close connection between art, religious tradition and local identity.

The exhibition will be open to the public until 30 June 2026, making it a long-term cultural highlight in Trapani’s museum landscape.

The streets light up with decorations, the scent of traditional sweets fills the air, and the Christmas markets in Piazza Umberto I offer local crafts, gift ideas and Sicilian treats such as spince, cassatelle and mulled wine, making it an ideal destination for anyone interested in tourism in Trapani.

Erice is also known as the Village of Nativity Scenes, with more than thirty crèches displayed throughout courtyards, churches and artisan workshops. Palazzo Sales hosts the large mechanical nativity scene, while the A. Cordici Museum exhibits the unique “Sports Nativity Scene”, inspired by Erice’s designation as European City of Sport 2027. The Town Hall features a collection never before shown in Sicily: over one hundred German nutcrackers and music boxes, from traditional carved figures to modern pop pieces and animated winter villages.

The programme also includes shows, traditional zampognari bagpipers, concerts, family activities and Santa’s House in Piazzetta San Giuliano. The live reenactment takes place inside the spectacular Mangiapane Cave, one of the most extraordinary and atmospheric locations in Sicily, nestled within the ancient rural village of Scurati.

Every year, the event attracts thousands of visitors thanks to more than 160 participants, including actors, artisans, volunteers and local families. Alongside the traditional Nativity characters, visitors can experience ancient crafts, everyday life scenes and authentic reenactments inspired by the Bethlehem described in the Gospels.

The Mangiapane Cave is a perfect natural stage. In the past, it hosted the simple daily life of shepherds and rural workers, a setting that closely resembles the atmosphere of ancient Bethlehem. Today, it is also a popular summer destination within the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve, a protected area of over 500 hectares featuring cliffs, panoramic trails, Mediterranean vegetation and crystal-clear waters. During the summer months, the cave also hosts cultural events such as the literary festival curated by the Centro Studi Dino Grammatico.

During the Christmas season, however, the cave transforms completely: torches, oil lamps and traditional “padelle romane” illuminate the environment, creating a magical and immersive atmosphere.

The official dates for the 2025–2026 edition are:
• December 25–28, 2025
• January 3–6, 2026

As in previous years, the event will be accompanied by a series of side activities, including concerts, cultural itineraries, guided tours and a small food village offering traditional local products, music and entertainment for all ages.

Visitors planning a trip can explore the portal dedicated to Tourism in Trapani for travel tips, itineraries and attractions.
Those wishing to stay by the sea can browse the selection of B&B in San Vito Lo Capo.
For more local activities and experiences, the section things to do in Custonaci offers routes, curiosities and ideas.

A unique opportunity to experience tradition, culture and Sicilian charm in one of the most evocative places in the region.
