The initiative offers an unusual experience for visitors staying in Favignana in July and provides an opportunity to discover a lesser-known part of the island’s history, alongside its beaches, boat trips and traditional tourist attractions.
The main attraction of the event will be the exhibition of five historic military jeeps in the central Piazza Madrice. The vehicles were originally used by American troops during the Second World War and were later assigned to the Italian Carabinieri.
The jeeps will return to Favignana 83 years after the events of 1943 and will remain on display from 23 to 27 July. Residents and visitors will therefore be able to see them up close while walking through the centre of the town and learn more about their history.
The decision to bring five compact vehicles to the island was also made to adapt the exhibition to Favignana’s urban spaces and to the larger number of visitors present during the summer season.
The main cultural event of the programme will take place on Friday 24 July 2026 at 6:30 pm at the former Florio Tuna Fishery of Favignana and Formica.
The meeting will focus on the wartime events that affected Favignana and the Egadi Islands during the Second World War, with particular attention to the consequences of the conflict for the local population and to the strategic role played by the islands in the Mediterranean.
The conference will be introduced by teacher Anna Viviano. Speakers will include Professor Girolamo Culmone, Chief Graduated Officer Davide Giammanco and Francesco Giustiniano, an officer of the Italian Red Cross. The event will be open to the public.
The Favignana event is part of a historical commemoration and educational project launched in 2021 by Davide Giammanco. The initiative has already involved other locations in western Sicily and reached Pantelleria in 2025, where several military positions still present on the island were recovered and enhanced.
The 2026 edition brings the project to Favignana, with the aim of telling the story of the war through original vehicles, historical accounts and public meetings for both the local community and visitors.
The jeep exhibition will take place from 23 to 27 July in Piazza Madrice, in the centre of Favignana. The conference is scheduled for 24 July at 6:30 pm at the former Florio Tuna Fishery, one of the island’s main historical and cultural landmarks.
The event can easily be included in a day trip around Favignana. Before or after visiting the exhibition, tourists can explore the old town, visit the former Florio Tuna Fishery or reach the island’s main coves by bicycle, scooter or boat excursion.
Visitors planning to stay on the island can browse a selection of B&Bs in Favignana and the guide to things to do in Favignana.
Those travelling from Trapani should check the Favignana hydrofoil timetable in advance, especially during the event dates and over the weekend.
