Erice is also preparing to experience one of the most heartfelt moments of Holy Week with the traditional Mysteries Procession on Good Friday, scheduled for April 3, 2026. It is a very ancient religious event which, since 1742, has passed through the charming streets of the medieval village, attracting worshippers, visitors, and tourists every year.
Unlike the more famous procession in Trapani, the one in Erice takes place on a smaller scale, yet it still preserves an authentic charm and a strong historical identity. Originally, the procession included both sculptural groups and living characters. Since 1856, however, the procession has consisted exclusively of statues and two ceremonial floats, created in the 18th century by Trapani artists using techniques similar to those employed for the Mysteries of Trapani, although on a smaller scale.
One of the main differences from the Trapani procession lies in the way the groups are carried. In Erice, the traditional “annacate” are not performed. Instead, the sacred groups move at a faster pace and are supported by forked carrying poles. This is also due to the particular layout of the streets in the historic centre, characterized by ancient stone paving and a more challenging route.
The event is organized by the Confraternity of San Martino, whose members lead the procession. The procession depicts the moments of the Passion and Death of Jesus, with scenes inspired by the Gospels such as the Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Ascent to Calvary, Jesus lying in the urn, and Our Lady of Sorrows. Closing the procession is the Crucifix, dating back to the 16th century.
The procession starts from the Church of San Giuliano at 2:00 pm and, accompanied by the town band, makes its way through the streets of the historic centre before returning at around 8:00 pm. Although smaller than the one in Trapani, the Mysteries Procession of Erice is an intense event, rich in spirituality and tradition, offering visitors an authentic experience in one of the most fascinating villages in Sicily.
