May is usually known as the month of flowers, when spring reaches its full beauty and the days invite people to spend more time outdoors. In Trapani, however, May is also becoming a month dedicated to books thanks to “Il Maggio dei Libri”, a national reading campaign joined by the Agostino Pepoli Regional Museum with a programme of meetings, readings and cultural events running until 29 May 2026.
For visitors staying in Trapani during this period, the initiative is a pleasant opportunity to discover the Pepoli Museum not only as one of the city’s most important cultural attractions, but also as a lively meeting place open to residents, families and tourists. Housed in the former Carmelite convent next to the Sanctuary of the Annunziata, the museum preserves important collections of paintings, sculptures, coral works, majolica, silverware and objects linked to the history of Trapani and western Sicily. During this event series, however, the museum also becomes a space for reading, conversation and cultural participation.
The programme opened on 23 April at 5:00 pm with the presentation of Salvatore Bongiorno’s book Lotte contadine nella Sicilia dei feudi, in conversation with Antonino Tobia. The calendar then continues in May with events designed for different audiences, from adults to young children.
One of the most family-friendly events will take place on Saturday 16 May at 5:00 pm, with read-aloud activities for children aged 3 to 6, organised in collaboration with Nati per Leggere. The aim is to introduce children to the pleasure of listening to stories and discovering books, at least for one afternoon away from tablets, smartphones and other digital distractions. Admission is free, but booking is required for this activity.
On 21 May at 5:00 pm, the museum will host Carla Rossi, who will present her book Oltre i margini. Il linguaggio artistico delle miniatrici europee tra Medioevo e Rinascimento. The volume explores the artistic and book-related creativity of women in Europe between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including both religious and secular contexts.
The programme will end on Friday 29 May at 5:00 pm with the screening of the documentary Vincenzo Scuderi. La coscienza popolare dei beni culturali, dedicated to cultural heritage, collective memory and public awareness of the value of historical and artistic assets.
The events of Il Maggio dei Libri at the Pepoli Museum are free to attend. Booking is required only for the children’s reading activity. Visitors who would also like to explore the museum’s permanent collections should check the regular opening hours: from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with last admission at 5:00 pm; Sundays and public holidays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, with last admission at 12:00 noon. The museum is closed on Mondays. The standard museum ticket costs €8, with a reduced ticket at €4.
