Among the most anticipated Christmas events in the Trapani area, and in all of Sicily, is the Custonaci Living Nativity, celebrating its 41st edition this year. The live reenactment takes place inside the spectacular Mangiapane Cave, one of the most extraordinary and atmospheric locations in Sicily, nestled within the ancient rural village of Scurati.
Every year, the event attracts thousands of visitors thanks to more than 160 participants, including actors, artisans, volunteers and local families. Alongside the traditional Nativity characters, visitors can experience ancient crafts, everyday life scenes and authentic reenactments inspired by the Bethlehem described in the Gospels.
The Mangiapane Cave is a perfect natural stage. In the past, it hosted the simple daily life of shepherds and rural workers, a setting that closely resembles the atmosphere of ancient Bethlehem. Today, it is also a popular summer destination within the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve, a protected area of over 500 hectares featuring cliffs, panoramic trails, Mediterranean vegetation and crystal-clear waters. During the summer months, the cave also hosts cultural events such as the literary festival curated by the Centro Studi Dino Grammatico.
During the Christmas season, however, the cave transforms completely: torches, oil lamps and traditional “padelle romane” illuminate the environment, creating a magical and immersive atmosphere.

As in previous years, the event will be accompanied by a series of side activities, including concerts, cultural itineraries, guided tours and a small food village offering traditional local products, music and entertainment for all ages.
