Today we are Egadi Islands archipelago, composed of three main islands and two other minor located about 7 km from the west coast of Sicily, in the middle of Marsala and Trapani, the five islands are part of the province of Trapani and in the together constitute the town of Favignana.
The archipelago, which is closely connected with Sicily and size of 37.45 km square is made up of five islands: Favignana, Marettimo Levanzo and are the main, while Ant and Maraone are minor, consisting mostly of rocks. The first human settlements on the islands are mainly Egadi Levanzo and Favignana, although to a lesser extent in the latter island, these settlements, as is supposed, it seems to be derived from glaciers that created a natural passage between Africa and Sicily. These islands were conquered by the Romans in 241 BC after the First Punic War, but in the hands of the Vandals Passariano with the collapse of the Roman Empire and later the Goths and then the Saracens.
Favignana - Undoubtedly the most famous and well known is the island of Favignana, which is located about 7 km from the western Sicilian coast facing the islands of the Lagoon of Marsala, and its surface is 19 square kilometers and its coastline, jagged and full of holes and caves, stretches for 33 kilometers. The shape of the island, butterfly, gave the ancient name Aegusa precisely butterfly, while the current name comes from Zephyr or a hot wind of the west, which will determine the very mild climate. Many have access to the sea, mostly rock though, the main ones are Lido Burrone (sand), Blue Cove, Cala Rossa, Cala Grande, Cave and Perciata Calamone.
LEVANZO ISLAND - Among the five islands of Egadi is the smallest, it has a terrestrial area of only 5 square kilometers, consists of white limestone and sees the presence of numerous caves, rolling stock, has no roads, except for a small stretch of paved road that leads to the beach Faraglione. On the coast overlooking a number of caves, including the most famous is the Grotta del Genovese featuring carvings and cave paintings of 11,000 years ago.
MARETTINO ISLAND - This island is the westernmost of Egadi and became detached from the mainland thousands of years before the other two main islands, are worthy of note are also several caves accessible only by sea.
Maraone ISLAND - This is a small strip of land, or perhaps I should say a big rock to form long and narrow a little over 600 meters and a width, which in point higher, no greater than 80. It lies between the island and the coast of Trapani Levanzo.
ANT ISLAND - This island can also be registered as a small strip of land, almost a big rock located between the island of Levanzo and the coast of Trapani, in the course of centuries was first inhabited by the Phoenicians and then Carthaginians, Greeks, Italians , Romans, Arabs and Normans. On this island you can still see an old trap with the remains of two ancient buildings, a lighthouse and the therapeutic community for drug dependence "World X" founded by Father Eligio.
