A Sanctuary of cetaceans also in the sea of San Vito lo Capo? Why not?
The proposal stems from Cosedimare, Sanvitoweb and the Pro Loco di San Vito, and will join those who care about the development of environmentally friendly tourism in this strip of land and water pollution that still manage to preserve the wild. 'S an idea that we blend in my head for years, and now we want to bring to the attention of public bodies and private individuals. Moreover, the possible creation of an area for observation of large whales without harming them in any way the activities of fishermen, who represent an important reference for the social and economic territory.
Always the sea front of San Vito Lo Capo, which closes to the great western Gulf of Castellammare, is intensely popular with dolphins (Delphinus delphis and Stenella coeruleoalba) and Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), which are found in flocks of hundreds and sometimes thousands of copies of each, from as little as a mile from the coast, and up to tens of miles, the families of cetaceans intersect the route of vessels at sea, and often our friends are placed right next to the bows of the boats for long stretches the accompanying navigators. It 's a pleasure to watch them swim and play in cobalt blue, do high jumps and sometimes leave the water only submerged vertically into the tail and moving it horizontally for tens of meters. In practice, the chances of these close encounters are repeated an average of 7:00 to 8:00 times every ten exits. More rare is the sighting of the swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and tuna (Thunnus thinnus) that are there but not visible unless you jump out of the water in pursuit of small prey, and with zifii (Ziphius cavirostris) slow swimming just below the water surface, also attending the meeting with the sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and bask in the sun and wrecks seem to drift away.
In this situation every sailing just off can be transformed into a fascinating and engaging: dolphin, Risso's dolphins and turtles can be photographed from a few feet away, and for the more adventurous can dive into the midst of Financo harmless whales. The sea becomes a school camp to learn to know, classify, study those of our dear friends. So why not make this beach a natural sanctuary for them?
We do not think that there are problems of coexistence with the fishermen, which in fact will have the opportunity - with the fishing tourism - to carry on their fishing boat off the curious, scientists and photographers.
Creating a Sanctuary for Whales would have no impact on fishing: the large marine mammals - also protected - do not fall prey of the fishermen, and has no bearing on their work areas frequented by dolphins & co. are far from the coast and totally impractical with the traditional methods of small-scale fisheries (trawling, seine, trammel, conzi), while the deep-sea fishing as the surface or purse longline dolphinfish ("Capone", Coriphaena hippurus) in the period Autumn does not interfere nor is hampered by the presence of cetaceans, which does not bite the bait the lines and keep well away from the seine. In short, the space "vital" is all and is available to all, dolphins, Risso's dolphins and fishermen.
The port of San Vito, also lends itself well to the project: four comfortable marina can accommodate dozens of boats too large for research and study of cetaceans in the dock by a convenient petrol station fuel, and there is bad weather could worry the captains and owners of vessels, which can be left to "hibernate" quietly in San Vito, always controlled by the guardians of the marinas. Finally, let us not forget, there's no need to stray too far from the coast (enough already one and a half - two) to meet the first samples of whale.
We launch this appeal from the pages of our web sites, and expect others to join us in this ambitious but far from impossible to achieve.
